A series of books on aviation history during the Second World War. Including books on Bomber Command, WW2 airfields, RAF Pathfinders and Victoria Cross Raids.   I have been re-reading my colleague Fiona Reynolds’s book on the history of countryside conservation in Britain, The Fight for Beauty. It was the government that finally stopped urban sprawl after the Second World War, by giving local authorities the power to control urban development, and it was the government that created national parks.

The development of agriculture has caused rapid changes to the rural environment. Today, with growing awareness and concern for environmental issues, there is a movement to stem further damage to the countryside and replace some of the values which have been lost. Voluntary non-profit organisations which own and manage land for countryside conservation are playing an increasingly important. a consequence of the Famine in the s, the countryside became depopulated as the towns and villages expanded. This set the scene for the development of urban industries, and steam power; mechanisation and factory labour became the norm in the cities and larger towns during the late s.
